A dozen Latin American countries have joined efforts to develop LATAM-GPT, the first specific artificial intelligence language for the region. «A language model made in Latin America, for Latin America»its promoters stand out.
Latam-GPT is an effort of more than 30 institutions from a dozen Latin American countries united in the objective of creating a Trained engine with local datawith cultural approach and understand the particularities of the region. The initiative is being coordinated by the National Artificial Intelligence Center (CENIA) of Chile and the resulting model will be released as an open source and in a collaborative space.
“We believe it can be a democratizing element of artificial intelligence and an accelerator of the use of AI in different spaces”the Chilean minister of Sciences, Aisén Etcheverry explained to the media. «In the case of Chile we are starting from the municipalities, but why not dream of schools, hospitals? (…) that have access to a Language model that is not imported and reflects our language?”he added.
«Unlike what has been done anywhere else in the world, this model has studied everything that is relevant to Latin America. He has read everything he could have about our history, politics, economy or our most ancestral culture, and that gives it an important seal ”explained Álvaro Soto, director of the National Center for Artificial Intelligence of Chile (CENIA), author and coordinator of this project.
What is LATAM-GPT
Technically, LATAM-GPT is a version of the open model of generative, calls 3 of goal with 70,000 million parameters. Conceived as an open AI model, Latam GPT will not be, for now, a chatbot (a program designed to simulate a conversation, such as Chatgpt), but something similar to a data center that will have the ability to operate as a “brain” at the service of those who require it, precise its promoters. The intention with language is to develop virtual assistants for public services, personalized educational systems or translators of native languages.
«LATAM-GPT is not comparable with Depseek or Chatgpt and its result is also very different because it is not a product that I am going to Buy but also that It is an engine that will be available for everyone«clarified the Chilean minister. The first public version of Latam-GPT is expected to be available in September.
