THE first Dragon Ball game in a couple of years proved to be a massive success, selling over 3million copies in just 24 hours.
Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is the first new game in the Budokai Tenkaichi fighting series in more than 15 years.
The game was expected to be a hit, but even die-hard fans of the franchise couldn’t predict the numbers we are seeing.
Stats on PC’s biggest digital store Steam, reveal that the game is the best-selling title on the platform.
With a peak of 122,554 concurrent players on Steam, Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero managed to beat other big releases this week, like Metaphor: ReFantazio and the Silent Hill 2 remake.
Sparking! Zero’s player count is impressive even when compared with the same stats of other fighting games, like the recent Mortal Kombat 1 and Street Fighter 6.
Mortal Kombat 1 peaked at 38,129 players 13 months ago, while Street Fighter 6 amassed 70,573 players around launch in June last year.
Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero marks the first game in this subseries since Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 was released in 2007.
It is also the first time a Budokai Tenkaichi game has been released with its Japanese title “Sparking!” worldwide.
Sparking! Zero is a 3D arena fighter with more than 180 playable characters from the Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Super, and Dragon Ball GT series.
On review aggregator Metacritic, the game boasts an 83 rating for its Xbox version, and after more than 23,000 user reviews on Steam, players are “Very Positive”.
Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero launched on October 11, 2024, for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at a high point for the Dragon Ball franchise.
The new Dragon Ball Daima anime series starts on October 18, 2024, and will be streamed by Netflix in the West.
