Lenovo’s ThinkPad X13 Detachable Wants to Be the Surface Alternative for Pros

The Microsoft Surface Pro line may dominate the small field of Windows tablets for work, but Lenovo has kept Microsoft on its toes for years now with its line of occasionally updated ThinkPad X Detachables. At MWC 2026, Lenovo unveiled the new ThinkPad X13 Detachable, a tablet-laptop hybrid built for mobile professionals in fields such as healthcare, sales, and engineering.

You could be reductive and say it’s just a tablet with a keyboard. Still, the ThinkPad X13 Detachable stands out as a no-compromise 2-in-1 device that feels more like a high-end laptop than most detachable 2-in-1 laptops do, maintaining the build quality and performance of the venerated ThinkPad line.

Instead, this is a long-awaited update to one of the best Windows tablets on the market, and a notable upgrade to the 12-inch Lenovo ThinkPad X12 Gen 2 we liked back in 2024.

Hands-On Impressions: Stiff Competition for Surface Pro

We recently went hands-on with the new ThinkPad X13 Detachable ahead of its reveal, and immediately noticed the larger screen in this long-awaited update, moving to 13 inches for more visual real estate than the Gen 1 and Gen 2 ThinkPad X12 Detachable. Unlike the Surface Pro, which uses thin, sometimes flexible tablet covers for its keyboards, the X13 mimics Lenovo’s flagship T-series laptops with a rigid, attachable keyboard, providing a much more substantial typing experience.

That rigid keyboard has enough space for full-size keys, avoiding the cramped feeling found on many competing detachables, thanks to the expansion to 13 inches. The keys provide 1.5mm of travel, delivering a typing feel remarkably similar to Lenovo’s most popular business laptops. Indeed, during our demo session, Lenovo noted that the detachable keyboard is functionally the same as the one on its ThinkPad T-series laptops. It provides a very satisfactory typing experience.

But the rigid cover is not all about the typing experience; it also provides a stable base. Whether you’re using it on a lap or a tray table, the experience will feel much more like a proper laptop than the flimsy magnetic covers provided with many tablet PCs.

Lenovo equipped the ThinkPad X13 Detachable with a stunning touch screen featuring a 2,880-by-1,920-pixel resolution in a 3:2 aspect ratio that can refresh at either 60Hz or 120Hz, depending on your needs. If the panel were OLED rather than IPS, it would match the 2024 Surface Pro’s display specs exactly. The X13 screen also shines with up to 500 nits of brightness, providing the crucial visibility needed for outdoor and field use.

Specs and Components: ‘Panther Lake,’ Plus a Pen

Intel’s Core Ultra 5 or 7 Series 3 “Panther Lake” processors provide the ThinkPad X13 with laptop-grade performance and modern AI capability. (Lenovo hasn’t name-dropped specific chips yet.) The laptop’s available memory ranges from 16GB to 64GB of soldered-down LPDDR5x RAM, making this—potentially, depending on how you configure it—an actual professional machine rather than just a basic tablet, but with memory that is not upgradable after purchase. (It also supports up to 1TB of storage from its single M.2 Type-2242 SSD slot.)

Since it is a touch-screen tablet with pen support, the X13 includes a full-size ergonomic Lenovo Slim Pen, complete with built-in storage. Instead of a physical slot in the chassis, the X13 picks up a trick from the Surface Pro and has a recess in its keyboard folio where the pen securely docks and recharges.

Finally, the X13 includes two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports—one on each side—providing flexible connections for high-power accessories and docking solutions. You’ll almost certainly need an adapter or two with just two ports, however.

Built to Last: Longevity and Sustainable Design

Like the 2026 ThinkPad T-series, also announced at MWC 2026, the X13 Detachable also focuses on longevity through a repairable design.

In line with Lenovo’s 2026 focus on sustainability, some of the device’s components that are most prone to wear and tear, such as the battery and USB-C ports, are field-replaceable. This ensures that repairs can be handled quickly by IT teams to extend the device’s life cycle.

ThinkPad X13 Detachable: Pricing and Availability

The Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Detachable will start at $1,999, a price step up from the smaller ThinkPad X12. At least you have time to save up for it, because it’s not rolling out until Q3 of this year. We’re looking forward to putting this rare worthy sparring partner to the Surface Pro family to the test.
