While Linux Mint 22.2 was just released one week ago, Linux Mint developers are planning for a Linux Mint 22.3 update before year’s end.

The Linux Mint crew published their August 2025 status update today that outlined their ongoing work toward releasing Linux Mint Debian Edition 7 (LMDE 7) as well as LInux Mint 22.3.

Linux Mint Debian Edition 7 is their forthcoming release that will be based upon Debian 13 packages. LMDE is the project’s hedge against any issues where if in the future they would have any problems with their main Ubuntu package base.

LMDE 7 will use Debian 13 packages while pulling in the improvements from Linux Mint 22.2 and also add support for OEM installations. LMDE 7 will also only ship for x86_64 given Debian 13 no longer fully supporting i386. The LMDE 7 beta release is expected later this month.

Linux Mint 22.3 meanwhile is still planned for release in December. There will be an updated Cinnamon desktop along with shipping some new features such as a status applet and new menu.

With their ongoing Wayland work, Linux Mint 22.3 aims to provide Wayland-compatible handling for keyboard layouts and input methods.
