Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) on Thursday said TikTok has complied with her request to remove footage of Charlie Kirk’s shooting on the campus of Utah Valley University, which occurred in front of a crowd of approximately 3,000.
“I have just received word from TikTok that they will be removing the horrific videos of Charlie Kirk’s final moments,” Luna wrote in a statement on the social platform X.
“Thank you, TikTok. I have also asked them to take down content that uses this horrific incident to incite violence against others,” she continued.
TikTok did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment on the matter.
However, Luna said the social platform sent a statement to her that read, “We are saddened by the assassination of Charlie Kirk and send our deepest condolences to his wife Erika, their two young children, and their family and friends.”
“These horrific violent acts have no place in our society. We remain committed to proactively enforcing our Community Guidelines and have implemented additional safeguards to prevent people from unexpectedly viewing footage that violates our rules,” the statement added.
Updates to TikTok’s community guidelines are set to go into effect Saturday morning as the social outlet said it aims to “inspire creativity and bring joy” to users.
In order to create a culture of “safety and civility,” TikTok reminded users that violent or criminal behavior, hate speech, harassment and bullying are not allowed, and that it will remove content that violates its standards.
The update comes after a Wednesday message from Luna, who put out a public request for TikTok; Elon Musk, the owner of the social platform X; and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to remove “horrifying” videos of Kirk’s murder.
The Florida lawmaker said Kirk’s family should not be “forced to relive this tragedy online.”
Luna is currently working to erect a statue in honor of the Turning Point USA founder inside the Capitol.
