In addition to Vulkan-powered AI / machine learning talks at last month’s Vulkanised 2025 conference, another interesting topic at this annual Vulkan developer conference was around improving the Vulkan API and making it easier for new developers and maximizing the potential with new GPU hardware.
Tobias Hector of AMD and the Vulkan Strategy Officer for Khronos talked at Vulkanised 2025 on “The Road to the Future” with ideas for improving the Vulkan ecosystem moving forward.
Among the items brought up were standardizing more than the API itself, such as minimum requirements, encouraging hardware vendors to design new hardware for new features, etc.
There is also some talk within the working group and other stakeholders around making Vulkan more of a joy to use, such as making some elements of the API easier to use while achieving peak performance. Some areas of the Vulkan API could also be simplified with new GPU hardware, offering better guidance on Vulkan extensions that should be avoided for new developments, and more.
In any event for those interested in the topic of enhancing Vulkan, Tobias Hector’s Vulkanised presentation is embedded above. All of the slides for those interested can be found at Vulkan.org. It’s an interesting topic and will be fascinating to see what changes ultimately come from this initiative.
