Disney+ and Hulu continue to deliver top-tier content weekly as they prepare to merge. Disney has always drawn subscribers with the Marvel and Star Wars franchises, so both Daredevil and Darth Maul highlight April, while Hulu serves a more mature audience.
The two services release a ton of stuff every week, so I try to help by picking three worthwhile items to put on your calendar. We’ve got the whole Hunger Games franchise landing this time around, along with a new Dragon Ball anime and the return of Malcolm in the Middle. The full list of content arriving on the streaming services is below.
This Week on Hulu and Disney+: PCMag’s Picks
Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair (April 10, Hulu)
Everything old is new again, and the latest early-’00s TV show to get a follow-up is Malcolm in the Middle, the Fox comedy about a dysfunctional family with child prodigy Malcolm trying to survive in the middle of it. It’s 20 years later, and Malcolm, Reese, and Dewey are adults coming back home to celebrate their parents’ 40th wedding anniversary. It’s just four episodes, so it won’t wear out its welcome.
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero (April 13, Hulu)
Akira Toriyama’s Dragonball series is one of the most influential manga of all time, inspiring a whole genre of big fights, skyrocketing power levels, and weird aliens. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is the 21st feature film based on the franchise and the first animated primarily with CGI. It looks amazing, though, with a nostalgic cell-shaded visual style that perfectly complements the story. When the nefarious Red Ribbon Army mounts a comeback, Piccolo and Gohan are the only fighters standing in its way.
The Hunger Games Series (April 14, Disney+)
One of the more interesting developments in the streaming world is how entire franchises seem to be moving from service to service. Most notable this week is the release of all the Hunger Games movies on Disney+. The 2012 original was a smash hit, launching Jennifer Lawrence’s career and setting opening day records. The follow-ups boosted the budget and the star power. The next entry, Sunrise on the Reaping, hits theaters in November of this year.
