A 25-year-old has died after falling from a balcony while on holiday in Malta.

Keiran Thomas was staying at a hotel in St Julian when the incident occurred on the morning of Friday, July 11, local authorities have said.

The man, from Bangor, Wales’ body was found outside the hotel, with paramedics rushing to the holiday accommodation in Triq Spinola, on the east of the island.

Following the incident, police blocked off the Triq Spinola road, outside of the hotel, prohiting traffic from driving past the location on Friday morning. Once Mr Thomas’ body was recovered, the road was reportedly reopened.

A police spokesman said: “Early [Friday] morning, at around 4.15am, the police were informed that their assistance was needed in Triq Spinola, St Julian’s.

“The police went immediately on site and from preliminary investigations, it resulted that a 25-year-old British man fell from a hotel balcony.

“A medical team was called to the scene but unfortunately, he was certified dead on site. Magistrate Dr Philip Galea Farrugia LL.D was informed about the case and appointed various experts to assist in the inquiry, whilst police investigations are ongoing.”

After a preliminary investigation, police say Mr Thomas may have fallen off the balcony at the hotel at around 4.15am, according to the Times of Malta.

Mr Thomas’ father, Alan Hughes, told the BBC that his son, who had a twin brother, was working as a software engineer at the time of his death, with ‘a promising career ahead of him’.

Welsh MP Sian Gwenllian said: “News of the death of a 25-year-old from Gwynedd in Malta is truly devastating. The pain his family must be experiencing is unimaginable. My thoughts, and those of the people of Gwynedd, are with them in their grief.”

MP Liz Saville Roberts added: ” My heart goes out to the young man’s family at this extremely difficult time.”

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We are in contact with the local authorities regarding the death of a British man in Malta.”

Malta Police’s investigations into the fall at the Cavalieri Art Hotel remain ongoing. St Julian’s is a popular tourist town on the east of the island of Malta, known for beaches such as Balluta Bay, a rocky stretch with a promenade and restaurants.

Bars and nightclubs line the streets of Paceville, an area south of St George’s Bay Beach, and the historic capital, Valletta, is also nearby, BristolLive reported.
