Matt Clifford, the founder of Entrepreneurs First (EF) who has been a key figure in the previous two government’s AI policy, has announced he will be stepping back as the Prime Minister’s AI advisor at the end of July.
Announced on LinkedIn, Clifford said he is ending his “tour of duty” for personal reasons, notably to spend more time with family.
Clifford was brought on to support Number 10’s AI efforts in 2023 under the premiership of Rishi Sunak.
Clifford was instrumental in the UK’s landmark AI Safety Summit and has since been one of the most important industry representatives to the government.
Clifford also led the formulation of the AI Opportunities Action Plan, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s primary strategy regarding AI implementation and support.
Though he will step back from his advisory position, he will retain his positions as chair of Entrepreneurs First and Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA).
“My sense of mission on AI is stronger than ever. I intend to dedicate my career to making AI go well for the UK and the world. I feel I’ve played a small role in that so far, but there is so much more to do… stay tuned,” Clifford wrote.
“I’m not leaving yet – I have five weeks left and am extremely ambitious about what we can get done in that time. I’m hugely grateful to my teams in government, EF and ARIA for their support, camaraderie and kindness throughout. Onwards!”
