Although it may go somewhat unnoticed among all the premieres that arrive in streaming every week, this animated series has something foundational: ‘Monster Command‘, which you can already see in Max, is nothing less than the advance of the new DC universe conceived by James Gunn and Peter Safran. We leave behind failed projects like ‘Flash’ or ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ and we focus on a new tomorrow, whose first and main bastion will be the new Superman movie directed by Gunn himself.
The Gunn touch is evident from the first minute of this series: it is inevitable to think of ‘The Peacemaker’ or ‘The Suicide Squad’ (in fact, the references to Gunn’s film about the group of antiheroes are constant, from the presence of Amanda Waller or Rick Flag to direct references to the plot of that undeserved DC box office failure), because the plot has the same starting point. A group of superbeings separated from society They are taken from prison to carry out a mission at the hands of the governmentin this case protecting a princess from a Balkan country.
Also in the writing style you can see Gunn’s unmistakable hand: the humor is sometimes sarcastic, sometimes hooligan, often bloody, but also with a touch of tenderness that at times reminds us of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, his other ( and kinder) supergroup of antiheroes. It is inevitable to draw comparisons between Weasel and Rocket Raccoon, for example, or between the need to feel outsiders of the protagonists and the self-ascribed category of villains, mercenaries or outlaws of many other of its characters with powers.
As a modest but forceful starting signal for the new DC Universe, the truth is that this ‘Monster Commando’ could not be more appropriate, since it makes two things clear: the personality of Gunn will be cardinal in several proposals, and the intention to distance himself from Marvel is clearin a production that finds similarities with things like the animated series of ‘Harley Quinn’ or the aforementioned ‘Suicide Squad’ and ‘The Pacified’, but not in the much calmer Disney franchise. Let’s hope it’s just the beginning of everything good and different that is to come.
