The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued multiple recalls last week, including notices for more than 77,000 Mazda vehicles due to an airbag problem.

Stellantis is recalling Fiat vehicles because the airbag failed to deploy
Stellantis is recalling 15,835 Fiat vehicles because of a software bug that could cause the front airbags to deploy with excessive force in a crash, the NHTSA said Wednesday.
Dealers will update the airbag control module software free of charge. The recall letters are expected to be delivered on November 7. Owners can contact FCA Customer Service at 1-800-853-1403. The FCA number for this recall is A3B.

GM recall due to brake fluid leak
General Motors is recalling 18,325 of its 2013-2019 Chevrolet Express Cutaway and GMC Savana Cutaway vehicles equipped with optional GM-supplied body adaptation brackets (RPO BNC). The automaker said in the NHTSA report: “The brake line may not have sufficient clearance from the body mounts, which could result in brake line damage that could lead to brake fluid leakage.” A brake fluid leak can cause a rupture, increasing the risk of an accident, the report said.
Dealers will inspect and replace the brake line as necessary as a free service. Recall notification letters are expected to be sent out on November 4. Owners can contact Chevrolet Customer Service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC Customer Service at 1-800-462-8782. GM’s number for this recall is N242466950.

Mercedes-Benz recall
For an engine failure
Mercedes-Benz is recalling 27,190 of its 2021-2023 S580 and Maybach S580 vehicles. In the NHTSA report, the luxury vehicle company said that “in the event of a mechanical failure in the Camtronic engine system, the engine control unit (ECU) software could cause the engine to overheat or stall.” Engine stalling can increase the risk of an accident. If an engine overheats, it can increase the risk of fire, the report said.
Dealers will update the ECU software free of charge. The recall letters are expected to be delivered on November 26. Owners can contact Mercedes-Benz Customer Service at 1-877-496-3691.

To disable the emergency braking system
Mercedes-Benz is recalling 2,025 of its 2024 vehicles. The luxury vehicle company said in the NHTSA report that “a software error in the MBUX multimedia system could deactivate certain vehicle systems, including cross-traffic alert, which automatically applies the brakes in certain driving situations.” An automatic emergency braking system that does not function as intended can increase the risk of an accident, the report said.
The MBUX multimedia system software and parking control unit settings are updated free of charge by a dealer or via an over-the-air (OTA) update. The recall letters are expected to be sent out on November 12th. Owners can contact MBUSA Customer Service at 1-800-367-6372.

Harley-Davidson recall due to damaged voltage regulator harness
According to the NHTSA, Harley-Davidson is recalling 41,637 motorcycles due to the risk of short circuits and an increased crash risk.
According to the notice, a voltage regulator wire can rub on other parts near the engine motor, causing the outer casing to wear and the wire to be exposed. This can lead to a short circuit and loss of power without warning the driver, NHTSA warned.
Dealers can inspect and, if necessary, repair the voltage regulator output harness and install a secondary mounting strap at no charge. Recall notification letters were sent on September 23. Owners can contact Harley-Davidson Customer Service at 1-800-258-2464. Harley-Davidson’s number for this recall is 0186.

Toyota recall due to loss of power brakes
Toyota is recalling 42,199 of its 2023-2024 Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles. “A software error in the skid control electronic control unit (ECU) can result in loss of brake assist when negotiating a turn,” the NHTSA report said. The report states that a loss of brake assist can increase the distance it takes to stop. This will increase the risk of a crash, the report said.
As a solution, dealers will update the ECU software for the skid control. This service is provided free of charge. Recall notification letters are expected to be sent out on November 5. Owners can contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. The Toyota number for this recall is 24TA11.

Mazda recall due to airbags deploying with excessive force
Mazda is recalling 77,670 of its 2016-2023 MX-5 Miata vehicles. The NHTSA report states that “a software error in the air bag control module could cause the front air bags to deploy with excessive force during a crash.” An airbag that deploys with excessive force can increase the risk of injury during a crash, the report said. .
The NHTSA also said the MX-5 Miata “does not meet the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 208, ‘Occupant Crash Protection.’”
To resolve the issue, dealers will update the Sophisticated Air Bag Sensor (SAS) control module software. The recall letters are expected to be delivered on November 17. Owners can contact Mazda Customer Service at 1-800-222-5500. The Mazda number for this recall is 6924I.
