Introduction
I’m Wes Huber, currently working full-time as a Software Developer for Brock Solutions – a company in the IIOT space serving Manufacturing and Transportation, and Logistics industries. Before working full-time, I worked freelance for about 7 years for various digital agencies and got a lot of one-off projects on Upwork. Currently transitioning into a Product Management role.
How Did You Start Writing?
I’ve always had a passion for creative writing since I was a kid, and I always appreciate tutorials and walkthroughs. I started writing coding tutorials about very specific issues that I would come across in projects where I had not seen a tutorial written for the issue yet. An example of this includes creating a React App as a custom plugin for a WordPress site.
How Has Technology Impacted The Way You Write?
Technology is an easy topic to write about because it’s so broad, it’s ever changing with a global impact, and there always seems to be some juicy tech drama. I’m sure many will cite AI helping them become a writer- that definitely helps. I started before the surge of AI tools, but I enjoy using them to help think of ideas and proofread articles, I think it’s a great tool if used properly, i.e., don’t copy pasta an entire article your AI tool generated from one prompt.
Share About Your Journey Highlights?
My journey in tech has been pretty steady. The highs were getting a really easy UpWork job that paid well. Also, getting over 200 users on my app, The Trick Book on the App store, has been a highlight, and working full-time as a developer, I’ve had some accomplishments within the company I am stoked on. The lows have been sitting at a computer for too long, struggling to land a job on UpWork when I was freelancing, stressing, dealing with the hierarchy of corporate structure, and learning how to deal with difficult coworkers.
What’s Your Creative Process?
I’m more of a hobbyist writer, it’s not a top priority for me, so I’m never stressing about “I have to write something” unless I’m entering one of the Hackernoon contests 😉 The ideas usually come to me when I’m working on a project, I think “Oh, I should write an article about this“ because “other developers will find this useful“ or “this should be talked about more“.
Your Favorite Memory/Article(s) to This Day?
I think I have yet to reach my full potential as a technical writer, so I don’t have any article that I’m immensely proud of, I think everything I’ve written has its own place. I do find this one useful because I’ve repeated it a few times, launching low cost APIs in AWS – but I’ve also done another one with the SAM CLI and Cloudformation since then.
How Did You Hear About HackerNoon? Share With Us About Your Experience With HackerNoon.
I’ve been reading articles from Hackernoon since circa 2018. I believe I found it just through Google search. A useful article from back in the day that got me here was setting up a Node.js app with PM2 on an Amazon EC2 server.
What Have You Learnt From Your Journey?
Stay humble, in tech, even if you have been coding for a long time, there’s likely stuff you still don’t know about. Continuously learn, do your best to keep an open mind, and be curious about new technologies while staying wary of them at the same time. Sometimes it’s not the best idea to hop on the latest tech hype train. Build stuff, share your knowledge, and have fun. That’s why we’re here, isn’t it?
Final Thoughts
I don’t think I’ll ever stop writing about tech as long as I stay in the industry. Because I think tech and writing go hand in hand, we all have to document our code anyway, right?
