Send a file of several hundred gigabytes in a few clicks? This is the promise of Transfer.it, a new service launched by Mega, known for its online storage platform. The tool allows you to send files without registration, without compression, and especially without size limit. Key: very simple use, comparable to that of Wetransfer, but without a volume ceiling or maximum number of files. Mega does not hesitate to compare the two services …

A direct competitor of Wetransfer, more flexible

Transfer.it tumbles into a delicate context for its main competitor. Wetransfer is indeed suspected of using its users’ files to cause artificial intelligence systems, which has prompted some to seek solutions that are more respectful of privacy.

But beware: if transfer.it is reassuring on the technical level, it does not offer encryption from start to finish … this is also the case of Wetransfer. Contrary to what Mega has always put forward for its other services, here, the files are quantified only on the servers of the company, and deciphered on the fly during the download, directly in memory.

No deciphered data is supposed to be kept on disk, and the keys are managed separately. This reduces technical constraints for users, but it also requires increased confidence in the supplier’s infrastructure.

Mega boasts of the merits of its infrastructure, used by more than 300 million people worldwide, and says that Transfer.it respects high security standards. But the choice not to use an end -to -end encryption is a sensitive point for certain users, in particular those who handle confidential or personal files. These will be better served by other better secure platforms, such as Proton Drive.

Mega’s reputation, moreover, is not flawless. Founded by Kim Dotcom after the closure of Megaupload, the New Zealand company quickly stood out, but remains associated with a certain sulphurous image. Kim Dotcom has cut the bridges for several years, but doubts remain on the real transparency of the company, in particular on the control of its infrastructure.

In 2022, a security researcher also pointed out faults in the encryption system used by MEGA for his main service – vulnerabilities since corrected according to the company.

Transfer.it can be used without account, or with a MEGA identifier to access additional functions such as transfers management or the absence of expiration date. Mega specifies that the service is entirely free until January 1, 2026. After this date, use limits could be set up, even if the company promises that they will remain ” generous ».
