Meituan announced eight initiatives to improve conditions for its delivery riders, including replacing penalties for late delivery with positive incentives by the end of 2025, according to a post on its official WeChat account. The measures include normalizing algorithm transparency, enhancing incentive mechanisms, and improving safety guidelines for delivery processes. Riders will undergo training and earn points instead of receive fines for delayed deliveries, Meituan said. The penalty-to-points shift has reached 80 cities already, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, covering all Meituan Express riders. Full implementation for other rider types is expected by the end of 2025. Early in December, Meituan and Ele.me launched new tools that notify or deactivate couriers who put in overly long hours. Meituan said these efforts were part of its long-term commitment to improving its algorithms. [Meituan Wechat official account]
