Metal Gear Solid 4 Gets Its First Remaster Nearly Two Decades After It Came Out

Sony held its State of Play on Thursday for PS5 games, and a segment of the show was dedicated to upcoming Konami releases. Starting off was the reveal of a new collection of Metal Gear Solid games, which includes the one title that hasn’t made the jump to next-gen consoles yet: Metal Gear Solid 4.

Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 bundles remasters of two previously released games (Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker). This marks a happy day for Metal Gear fans who have been waiting for MGS4 to make the jump to newer consoles. The game first came out in 2008 for the PS3, and it’s the only one in the franchise that Konami never attempted to re-release or remaster until this new collection.

When does Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 come out?

The collection will be released on Aug. 27. It’s available for preorder on the PSN Store for $50.

What platforms will Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 be released on?

The PS5 is the only platform confirmed, but it could make its way to PC and Xbox Series X|S at a later time if Sony has an exclusivity window for these games (which has happened before with titles like Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth).

Is Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 a remake or remaster?

The collection is a remaster of the two games. Both titles will include improved resolutions, better frame rate and customized controls. They might also feature other quality-of-life upgrades, but those have yet to be confirmed.

What else is included in Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2?

Along with the two main games, the new collection will include screenplay books and master books for both titles, as well as a digital soundtrack. One interesting inclusion is a third and smaller game, Metal Gear: Ghost Babel. First released on the Game Boy Color in 2000, Ghost Babel was Konami’s follow-up to Metal Gear Solid, released two years prior on the PlayStation. The Game Boy Color game used the same top-down graphics as the first and second Metal Gear games released for the NES and MSX2 consoles, but it’s officially non-canon in the Metal Gear franchise.

What are Metal Gear Solid 4 and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker about?

Metal Gear Solid 4 is the last game in the Metal Gear Solid series story and features the final mission for Solid Snake as he finally puts an end to the Patriots, the mysterious group that seems to be behind all the events of the previous games.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker follows the events of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. Snake, or rather Big Boss, has created his own military faction in Colombia. As he builds his own army, Big Boss is asked to help fight another military force that is growing in power and developing its own nuclear tank.
