Following reports of layoffs across its China operations, data storage firm Micron said on Tuesday that the workforce adjustments were driven by the continued weakness in the mobile NAND memory market, the growth of which has lagged behind that of other NAND businesses. The company has decided to cease future mobile NAND product development globally, a move that includes the termination of its UFS5 (Universal Flash Storage 5.0) R&D program, but emphasized that it will continue to support other NAND solutions for SSDs (Solid-State Drives) and automotive applications. The layoffs mainly affect support departments such as application engineering, embedded R&D, and testing, impacting employees in locations including Shanghai and Shenzhen. [Icsmart, in Chinese]
