Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 Will Be Supported Until 2028

The end for Windows 10 is coming soon. Microsoft is ending support for Windows 10 in October, but it has also added optional extensions for those who want to continue to use its operating system for up to three more years.

Now, Microsoft has confirmed the end of support for its Edge browser, and it’s the same for everyone, even if you don’t pay extra for continued support.

In a new update to its documentation, spotted by Windows Latest, Microsoft has confirmed Edge will continue to get updates until October 2028. It says it is until “at least” then, so it may also decide to continue to offer updates for even longer.

The new note on the support documents reads, “Microsoft Edge and the Microsoft WebView2 Runtime will continue to receive updates on Windows 10 22H2 until at least October 2028, coinciding with the end of the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program.”

The ESU program from Microsoft is a way for users to extend support for Windows 10 by one to three years with security-only updates.

To access the ESU program, you can either pay a $30 fee for a year of updates, or you can get access for free if you sync your Windows Backup directly to OneDrive. A third option is to use 1,000 Microsoft Rewards program points to buy access. That’s relatively easy to earn as downloading a program, such as Bing, from Microsoft earns you 500 points.

The brand also says, “The ESU program won’t be required for devices to continue receiving Microsoft Edge or WebView2 Runtime updates.” That means you can get this extended support even if you’re not planning to join the ESU program.

This is especially important for any users who ignore the end of Windows 10 support and further put off the upgrade to Windows 11. It will mean their browser continues to receive vital security updates, even if they don’t act to change anything else.

It’s currently unclear how long rivals like Google Chrome or Firefox will continue support for Windows 10, but we expect to hear more from alternative browsers soon.
