Every year, these are thousands of video games which are released on most of the media that we all know: PC, Xbox (Series X/S), PlayStation (PS5) or even Nintendo (Switch). Among these games, some are developed par des studios « First-Party » which belong to manufacturers and which are therefore exclusive.
This is the case of Naughty Dog, Santa Monica Studio, Insomniac Games, Guerrilla Games or even the Team Asobi at PlayStation. But we also find First-Party studios at Microsoft (with Turn 10, Double Fine Productions, The Coalition, Ninja Theory or even Playground) and Nintendo (with Retro Studio, ND Cube, 1-Up Studio or even Monolith Soft).
But many games that are released on different media are also titles from third-party studioswho does not are not excluded. However, Microsoft notes that its console is not necessarily the dominant platform and that certain titles don’t go out on the lattereven if there is no exclusivity agreement with Sony or Nintendo. To overcome this problem, the American company decided to launch a new program to attract new developers to Xbox.
Xbox Research: new developers on Xbox
With its new program, Microsoft intends to attract new developers to be able to release even more games on Xbox, but also to make life even easier for developers who are already on Xbox. This new program called Xbox Research (similar to the old Xbox Insider program) allows developers to answer a series of questions in order to know and best target their opinions and needs.
This program will collect feedback on tools, performance tuning, debugging utilities and many other aspects of game development to attract new developers, but also to collect feedback from game studios that already offer games on Xbox.
“Typically, it takes a lot of people to create and market a game, including marketing, user research, artists, audio, PMs, community managers, etc. We want to hear from everyone who work on games or help game studios, because if we can make your life easier, it makes gaming better (…) If you’re not on Xbox, we’d like to know why. And honestly, if you use our competitors’ products, you probably have a great perspective that we could learn from! »
Deborah Hendersen, PhD, Principal User Researcher for Xbox
With this new program, Microsoft wants to simplify access to development on Xbox consoles and therefore offer players even more titles. There is a good chance that this program will be a solution to deal with recent problems like with Baldur’s Gate III which was released many months after the PS5 version following technical problems on Xbox and in particular the Series S.
This is also the case with fighting games Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection : Arcade Classics et Capcom Fighting Collection 2 which will arrive on Xbox next yearagain following technical problems. Recent critical and commercial success Black Myth Wukong or even Enotria : The Last Song are also part of the list of games planned for Xbox, but which will arrive with an indefinite delay following development issues on Microsoft consoles.
