MoltenVK 1.3-rc1 was released today as the first test release of this updated Apple iOS / macOS / tvOS / visionOS layer that implements the Vulkan API atop the Apple Metal drivers. With MoltenVK 1.3 there is Vulkan API 1.3 support finally in tow.
Tracking for the past two years has been this issue ticket for the Vulkan 1.3 requirements needing to be supported by MoltenVK. Finally the last of the work was closed out this week and MoltenVK 1.3 being prepped for release with MoltenVK 1.3-rc1 out today.
It has taken a lot of work to get Vulkan 1.3 APIs implemented over Apple’s Metal APIs. This merge last week got it over the finish line with advertising Vulkan 1.3 and remaining features like advertising the Vulkan Memory Model extension and other capabilities.
Those wanting to enjoy the Vulkan 1.3 features atop Apple devices — primarily macOS laptops/desktops and iOS mobile devices — can find the MoltenVK 1.3-rc1 release via GitHub.
Vulkan 1.3 as a reminder debuted in early 2022 and Vulkan 1.4 came in late 2024. There is already this issue ticket for MoltenVK to track the needed Vulkan 1.4 features. At least there MoltenVK already appears to be in relatively good shape so hopefully will not be too long before seeing a MoltenVK 1.4 release.
