It is always very worrying to learn that an operator like Free or a delivery company like Mondial Relay has been the victim of a cyberattack. Typically, hackers are after customer data, including you.
Let’s be clear, there is a good chance that your personal information ended up in the wild last year. In 2025, no less than 40.3 million French accounts were hacked.
40.3 million accounts compromised in France in 2025, in second position in the world ranking
The company Surfshark reveals its report on data leaks occurring in 2025. No less than 425.7 million accounts have been hacked around the world over the past year. The United States is at the top of the most affected countries and alone accounts for 34% of data leaks. France is in second place, followed by India, Germany and Russia.
40.3 million accounts were compromised in France in 2025 and just over ten million in the last quarter of the year alone. The third quarter, from July to September, was the most eventful with 15.6 million accounts hacked.
“While the global trend shows a more intense fourth quarter, with more than 141.5 million accounts affected, double the first quarter, probably due to Black Friday and the end-of-year holidays, France is following a different trajectory. This proves that French users must remain vigilant all year round, because cybercriminals never stop.explains Tomas Stamulis, head of IT security at Surfshark.
The Surfshark study also focuses on the sectors most targeted by hackers. That of the Internet and telecommunications comes first and weighs 20% of accounts compromised in 2025. Note that France is not among the top of the ranking only thanks to its large population. The density of data breaches (number of compromised accounts relative to the country’s population) is 12 times higher than the global average.
Let’s still hope that the total volume of hacked accounts around the world drops drastically in 2026. Unfortunately, it’s off to a pretty bad start given the numerous cyberattacks already recorded this year, particularly in France.
Remember that the data of 300,000 holders of the Avantages Jeunes card ended up on the dark net in January.
