TL;DR

  • HONOR has revealed the Magic VVVVVVVV foldable phone as an April Fool’s Day prank.
  • The company says this is the first smartphone that turns into a TV.
  • The announcement also comes as Samsung discontinues the Galaxy Z TriFold.

It’s April Fool’s Day, so naturally some smartphone makers are getting in on the action. OPPO has already revealed an Android-powered 4K umbrella, and now HONOR has announced a tongue-in-cheek fictional product. But is it weird that I’m not completely opposed to this concept?

HONOR announced the HONOR Magic VVVVVVVVV on social media today. Or is it the Magic VVVVVVVVVV? Either way, this puts the HUAWEI Mate XT and Galaxy Z TriFold devices to shame. Check out the official image at the top of the page.

“The first smartphone that turns into a TV,” reads a tagline on the picture. This is thanks to the multi-folding design, which means you have a giant folding display in your pocket. That beats the dual-folding approach seen on the aforementioned HUAWEI and Samsung devices. Then again, one render shows a supremely thick phone that puts that canceled Energizer 18,000mAh phone to shame.

Would you buy a multi-hinge foldable?

Needless to say, this is clearly an April Fool’s Day prank. And you won’t struggle to pick up some clues. For one, there’s the ridiculous name and the non-existent April 31 launch date. Then there are the actual renders.

The render on the left suggests it’s a proper tri-folding device (i.e., folding three times), while the render on the right suggests it folds seven times. So which is it? Furthermore, the render on the right doesn’t show any hinges. You’d expect them on both the left and right sides of such a huge multi-folding foldable.

In any event, it’s just a joke after all. I also imagine that so many hinges and such a large folding panel would be a durability nightmare. But I wouldn’t be completely opposed to a more ambitious multi-hinge foldable phone. This would allow you to carry a truly large screen in your pocket for work or entertainment, potentially dwarfing the Mate XT and Galaxy Z TriFold’s 10-inch panels. With the right software and a keyboard accessory, this could be a decent laptop replacement in some scenarios.

This cheeky post also comes as Samsung discontinues the Galaxy Z TriFold. We had hoped that other manufacturers, such as HONOR, would hop on the dual-folding bandwagon, but we’ll just have to keep waiting.
