One of my main drawbacks with Android is video recording. It doesn’t matter if I use the best high-end on the market: the results never convince me. What does this app do? First of all, Blackmagic Camera allows you to adjust each and every manual control on your camera. Namely, millimeters of the lens – change between cameras, but knowing the focal length -, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, tint…
We can configure exposure compensation, focus guides, autofocus or manual focus, zebras… Basically, it’s like having the interface of a professional camera, but on a phone.
In addition, it is an app that allows you to modify the bit rate at which our phone records. This allows you to adjust how much it will end up taking up. It also allows you to change the color space, the codec used, resolution…
One of the factors that I also like is that it allows us to reduce noise in real time – something important in video – and even correct the distortion of the camera we are using.
Finally, it allows us to apply our LUTs to the video itself, so that we don’t have to edit anything. We select LUT, apply it, and it will be recorded in real time with the settings applied. Crazy.
Why it is important. Taking into account that there are hardly any mobile phones with professional video controls – and that, even if they do have them, they are not as complete -, this app represents a before and after when it comes to recording video on Android. It requires a certain learning curve if we want to get the most out of it, but once we get used to using it, it will be difficult to use the stock app again.
