While everything led us to believe that Netflix was going to focus 100% on Gaming to make its “Netflix Games” platform break through, we learned today that the streaming giant just closed its development studio in California. What future for video games on the streaming platform?
Netflix Games: focusing everything on third-party publishers?
Three years ago, Netflix arrived in the video game industry with Netflix Games, a new offering, directly included in subscribers’ subscription of the platform, allowing access to many video games, without additional costs, sans pubs et without in-app purchases. Netflix’s objective was very clear: become an important player in the video game industry.
A year later, Netflix opened its first development studio in California. Over the months, the streaming platform has added numerous titles and started collaborations with third-party publishers to integrate big hits like the trilogy Grand Theft Auto end of 2023 which generated more than 210 million downloads in a few months.
Recently, Netflix added games Civilization VI et Street Fighter IV in its catalog, confirming its desire to offer a service worthy of the name to its subscribers.
Unfortunately, we learned today that the development studio located in California just closed its doors less than two years after its creation. A real blow for the company which planned to make the iPhone a real game controller. The future of Netflix Games looks very unclear and it’s a safe bet that streaming platform focuses on collaborations in order to integrate cult games on its platform. At the moment, it is very difficult to be able to position ourselves and imagine what is possible.
Recently, the entire video game industry is experiencing a real crisis with more than 20,000 layoffs since the start of the year. Undoubtedly one of the worst periods for video games since the crash of 1983.
