A NETFLIX user has warned other subscribers about an apparent mistake that could hike your bill by up to £6 a month without you realising.

Customers have raised the issue for years but now a parent has come forward to reveal the “wild” extra cost.

The streaming giant offers three types of subscription plan, with a different limit on the number of screens allowed to watch at the same time.

Netflix’s cheapest tier with ads is £5.99 and allows just one screen to be used at a time.

The middle standard tier, which costs £12.99 a month, allows two concurrent streams.

And the top tier premium subscription is currently charged at £18.99 a month, with four simultaneous streams permitted.

If you reach the maximum number of devices at a given time a notification will appear to warn you and may offer you a chance to upgrade.

But as some users have pointed out, this means the kids could charge more to the bill payer’s account without you knowing.

And there doesn’t appear to be a way to prevent it from happening on kids profiles either, according to one viewer.

The only way you will know is if you check your emails regularly and notice one from Netflix confirming changes to your account.

“Got home and saw an email from Netflix saying my account had been upgraded to the $25 4K plan,” Reddit user RGBLEDWill wrote on the social network.

“Seems one of my kids got a prompt and upgraded (from their child account).

“Netflix support was like, “yep, they can do that.” Wild”

The Sun has approached Netflix to find out whether such a loophole does exist but we have not heard back.

It’s not the first time someone has complained about the issue.

Two years ago, another person wrote on Reddit: “I have netflix on the standard plan so 2 people can watch at the same time.

“I’d like to upgrade to premium but it’s too expensive, so I don’t.

“I have 3 profiles in netflix as there’s 3 users in the house, so there could be times when all 3 want to watch, but can’t.

“Last night, I received an email from netflix saying my account had been upgraded to premium – I checked on netflix and it had. No-one has said it was them, I’ve changed the account back to standard, but I’m still going to get billed for a month of premium.

“Is there a way I can stop anyone else changing the account plan? I can’t see a way of locking plan access to just one profile and it doesn’t even appear to ask for a password to change the profile even though this affects my billing!”
