Summary

  • Netflix’s new tvOS Apple TV app redesign is a major update with a modern look and changes to navigation.
  • The redesign merges My Life and My Netflix into one menu option, simplifying the overall menu.
  • Netflix says update includes an improved recommendation system that better caters to user moods and interests.

Netflix’s redesigned tvOS Apple TV app has finally released after first appearing on TV platforms like Samsung and LG several months ago.

You might be wondering why I’m writing about a Netflix app redesign, but I promise I have a good reason. Unlike past Netflix tvOS app facelifts, Version 3.0 is one of the most significant redesigns the streaming app’s Apple TV app has received in years, with several fundamental changes to how you navigate its menus.

Along with a more modern, streamlined look with massive tiles that offer a wider preview of TV shows and movies, the familiar left-hand sidebar navigation system that’s been around since 2018 is gone. In its place is a top menu that features Search, Home, Shows, Games, and My Netflix. It’s a bit confusing at first, and since I’m not a fan of change, I don’t quite like it yet. That said, I feel like it might grow on me over the next few weeks, since the navigation bar is now easier to access in a sense.

Netflix says its new redesign features a better recommendation system

The streaming platform aims to be more personalized

Other changes include My Life and My Netflix being merged under one option to simplify the menu. On that note, while the new massive tiles feel like a little too much at first, the fact that they expand as you move your cursor over them makes the overall UI feel far more modern.

Netflix says that the new design comes alongside an improved content recommendation system that better responds to “moods and interests in the moment.” The new recommendation system has a few additional labels, including “recent” content and where a movie or TV show is currently ranking.

The streaming platform’s big tvOS redesign was announced back in May, but it’s only being pushed out now. If you don’t see the update on your Apple TV, you can download it manually from the App Store and select Update (I had to do this). It’s unclear if Netflix has plans to bring this UI to more platforms. I can’t see it working well on iOS or Android given the feels like it was specifically designed specifically with large screens in mind. The streaming giant recently added conversational generative AI search to its iOS app.
