Earlier this week, it was reported that OpenAI was in a bit of a tizzy over the current state of Google’s Gemini generative AI model. A so-called “code red” declaration was made, which will reportedly result in the next upgrade to ChatGPT arriving sooner than expected.

OpenAI shipped its major model upgrade, GPT-5, on August 7. The model improved the user experience by automatically routing queries to the current sub-models for quick responses or deeper answers.

On November 12, OpenAI replaced GPT-5 with a “warmer, more intelligent” model called GPT-5.1.

While it took three months to go from GPT-5 to GPT-5.1, it sounds like OpenAI will push out GPT-5.2 in under a month’s time.

Tom Warren reports for The Verge that OpenAI plans to release GPT-5.2 next week on Tuesday, December 9.

Sources familiar with OpenAI’s plans tell me that the company is planning its first response to Gemini 3 with its upcoming GPT-5.2 update.

I understand GPT-5.2 is ready to be released, and could appear as soon as early next week. Sources tell me the 5.2 update should close the gap that Google created with the release of Gemini 3 last month — a model that topped leaderboards and wowed Sam Altman and xAI CEO Elon Musk.

According to Warren, the latest update should focus on “speed, reliability, and customizability” rather than new features.

OpenAI certainly hasn’t been shy about releasing new features and improvements to its current model. In recent weeks, OpenAI added group ChatGPT sessions as well as merging text and voice modes.
