It was one of the best and most followed Switch functions, and one that decidedly placed it ahead of other rival platforms. But as of March, it closes this system that allowed us to use the gold points that were won when buying digital software at the ESHOP or through download codes, and that allowed to obtain discounts on future purchases. Nintendo has officially announced that he will withdraw them on March 25, 2025

Since 2016. More than eight years ago, Nintendo’s rewards system had caused thousands of players to benefit from the points that were obtained by spending on the ESHOP. The possible benefits in the Nintendo digital store were divided into two: platinum points (they were obtained when playing mobile games such as ‘Super Mario Run’ or ‘Fire Emblem Heroes’ and complete missions related to the My Nintendo service) and gold points (As we mentioned, they are achieved with digital points). The latter are the ones that will disappear.

They can still be used. The good part is that the points can continue to be used until they expire and past on March 25. The points have a validity of 12 months from the moment they were achieved, and if physical copies of games acquired before March 25 are recorded, the points will be obtained equally. Similarly, any anticipated order made before the deadline also generates gold points, although the game is officially launched later. In this way, players who reserve titles can still benefit from this system.

Possible reasons. Nintendo has not specified the reasons for this decision, but in all likelihood it is linked to the launch of Nintendo Switch 2, scheduled for this year, and of which more details will be known a week after the discontinuation of the gold points. Nintendo has already declared its intentions of maintaining its virtual store system with the same characteristics as the current eShop, so perhaps switch 2 be matched a new type of currency or is Set a substitute system of the gold points.

5% very juicy. The discount that was obtained thanks to the gold points was 5%: that amount could be deducted from future digital purchases (and 1% in physical purchases), which is not a crazy amount, but very useful if you frequent The indie of the store, where there are usually releases between 3 and 5 euros. It was a great way to access and even try free economic games.

We will always have the others. The Gold Points system is not the only discounts for points of the console panorama (another reason to think that Nintendo is not eliminating, but only adapting it to Switch 2). In PlayStation is the PlayStation Stars and Xbox system, the Microsoft Rewards. There are, however, significant differences: Sony’s case is the most recent, the awards are achieved by making very variable complexity missions in the titles of the console catalog. The points can be redeemed by digital collectibles. In the case of Microsoft, they are also achieved with missions and games, and can be exchanged for varied awards, even Game Pass subscriptions.
