Last month, Astro Bot arrived exclusively on PS5 and then offered us a wonderful adventure, filled great ideas et excellent references to the world of PlayStation, but also, and more broadly, to the universe of a multitude of great video game sagas. Unfortunately, some major licenses are missing, such as Final Fantasy. Apparently, the Japanese publisher was not very keen on the idea of transforming its cult characters into little robots.
Astro Bot sans Cloud & Tifa
Astro Botit’s a colorful adventure with a multitude of good ideas and great gameplay. It’s clearly one of the best PS5 titles to date (which was entitled to a very rare 10/10 from WorldOfSoftware). Very shortly after its release, Team Asobi (the developers of the game) confirmed that the game would be entitled to free DLC with new levels. We learned during the last State of Play that Stellar Blade et Helldivers II will be part of the licenses in the spotlight during this first DLC.
Alas, we obviously won’t have to count on Cloud, Tifa, Barret or even Sephiroth in bot version. Indeed, during a recent interview given to Game File, Nicolas Doucet, the president of Team Asobiquickly raised the subject and implied that Square Enix had not given its authorization to exploit the rights to the Final Fantasy license: “It is difficult for us to comment on this, we really respect the choice of each editor”.
This could therefore explain why Square Enix licenses do not appear in the game and that we only had the right to a reference to Final Fantasy VII in the first game Astro’s Playroom on PS5 (in 2020) with Cloud’s sword. We hope that the success of the game will change the publisher’s mind and that the heroes of Final Fantasy will soon arrive via a new DLC!
