Meta-owned WhatsApp will stop working on older Android devices starting 1 January 2025. As per the report devices running on Android KitKat will not support WhatsApp from the new year. This means that people who are still using older Android devices or in some cases 10 years 10-year-old devices have to change their devices or buy a new device.
The instant messaging platform is ending the support on older devices because the hardware in these devices is not capable of supporting the new features of WhatsApp. Meta always adds or releases several new features on WhatsApp to make the platform more interactive and user-friendly. There are several AI features introduced in the past several months on WhatsApp that are not eligible for older devices and hence the tech giant decided to end the WhatsApp support for devices that are running Android KitKat.
