Version 25.05 of the Open 3D Engine “O3DE” was released today for this open-source project born out of Amazon’s Lumberyard engine nearly four years ago. With O3DE 25.05, this open-source game/simulation engine continues to be advanced by Amazon/AWS, Meta, Huawei, and other organizations.

The Open 3D Engine 25.05 release brings more improvements to its simulation capabilities, various Vulkan API improvements, continued performance and stability enhancements, overhauling the Trackview code, mature MGPU support, and other changes.

On the Vulkan API side there is HDR support with the Vulkan render hardware interface (RHI) code, updating the Vulkan Memory Allocator used, improved Vulkan barriers usage, and other fixes.

O3DE changes specific to Linux include some Python integration fixes and addressing a system hang when opening a level in the O3DE Editor.

The project’s release notes sum up the 25.05 release as:

“Open 3D Engine (O3DE) continues its forward momentum with a new set of updates focused on stability, performance, and overall user experience. As part of these improvements, Trackview has been comprehensively overhauled—thanks to contributions from Tech-Round—and is now fully operational within the O3DE ecosystem. Additionally, performance and usability enhancements to the Atom renderer have been delivered through the leadership of AWS and Huawei.

For simulation, O3DE now implements the newly standardized simulation interfaces for ROS 2. This interface standard is a joint endeavor between Open Robotics, Nvidia, and Open 3D Foundation via Robotec.ai, to be implemented in upcoming releases of Open 3D Engine, Isaac Sim and Gazebo. Meta has also streamlined the setup process for its Meta Quest Mobile SDK within O3DE. With package management now handled automatically by the 3rdparty packaging system, manual installation steps have been eliminated, improving developer workflow. More than 250 bugs were resolved for this release.”
