Openai has announced the launch of an open weight AI model. It will arrive in the coming months and will mark a change of strategy on the development of previous models such as GPT-4.

The competition is always positive and the cataclysm caused by the emergence of Depseek and the advances of Google and Meta, have reduced OpenAi leadership in artificial intelligence. The changes were forced and in the face of proposals and closed code, the leading firm in AI has designed a Opening strategy. Of course, the movement will be light, progressive and at the moment it will not reach open source developments such as the Chinese firm Depseek.

Open weight AI model

There are few who think that the AI of the future must be open source. However, access to OpenAi models has been produced so far through its interface or integrating API keys into their applications, which means that the model itself remains confidential and private.

Open weights models, such as the one announced by Sam Altman, are different. In these models, the preerentated parameters (the “pesos” that define how the model responds) They are openly shared with the public. Developers and researchers can download them, execute them locally, adjust them for specific use cases or integrate them into personalized applications.

It should be clarified that the fact that The weights are open does not mean that everything else is. The training code, data sets and detailed records can remain owners or not disseminated, so we cannot consider them open source complete models as we understand this type of development.

But for OpenAi it is already an advance. From academic researchers to independent developers, there is consensus to prefer open weight models because they offer greater flexibility, transparency and cost control. In the announcement, Altman said that Openai will evaluate the model according to its preparation frame, like any other model, and that the company will carry out additional work knowing that this model will be launched openly (we insist, only in some of its parts) and that it will be modified.

To support the launch, Openai has scheduled a series of events for developers in the United States and Europe. These sessions will be interactive, allowing users to experiment with prototypes and customization options and, even more important, offer feedback. Interested developers can sign up for this link for that cycle of sessions.
