Openai has launched in a previous view, Codex. It’s a AGENT IA specialized in codingwhich allows experienced developers to delegate routine and relatively simple programming tasks to an agent that will generate code ready for production and show their work during the process.
Codex is based on the new Codex-1 model, a personalized OpenAi O3 version trained through reinforcement learning for programming tasks in the real world. Unlike other software engineering agents, Performs the tasks assigned independently in a separate and isolated environment, preloaded with the assigned base code. This allows you to perform various tasks in parallel, such as writing new functionalities, analyzing the base code to respond, correct existing errors or propose requests for extraction for review.
Each assigned task is performed in a specific container that is preloaded with the user code base and is designed to accurately reflect its development environment. For Codex to be more effective, developers can include an “agents.md” file in the repository with personalized instructions, for example, to contextualize and explain the basis of the code or to communicate standardizations and style practices for the project. It is a kind of readme.MD, but for AI agents instead of humans.
Openai states that Codex usually takes between 1 and 30 minutes to complete the task, depending on complexity. Once completed, it can also provide evidence, such as records, for verification. If necessary, users can also supervise their progress in each task. And it is that Openai points out that this tool cannot replace the human review: «It is still essential that users Review and manually validate all the code generated by the agent before integration and execution ».
Availability and Price
Users can access CODEX from ChatGPT and assign software engineering tasks by clicking “code” after writing the application. At the moment, it is only available for Chatgpt Pro, Enterprise and Team subscribers. For Plus and Education versions will be available later.
Since Codex is in its preliminary research phase, OpenAi will offer free access at no additional cost, at least in the coming weeks. Later, Openai will implement access with limited rate and flexible price options for this agent dedicated to software engineering.
