update 12/26/24 11:17 PM: Chatgpt is working normally again |
---|
If this Thursday after Christmas you are trying to use ChatGPT and you can’t, it’s not your computer or Internet connection. The famous artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot from OpenAI not working at the moment. The service outage, according to Downdetector.com, appears widespread. Both the international version of the service that monitors popular services and applications in real time, and the Spanish version, account for the failure.
At the time of writing, ChatGPT does not respond to user queries. In our tests it shows an error message in English. As we can see in the image below, it says “something went wrong” and invites us to visit the OpenAI help center if the problem persists. The company’s service status page, meanwhile, notes that both the chatbot and Sora, the AI video generator, are not working normally.
The origin of the fall is unknown. The company led by Sam Altman has not provided details and has simply indicated that it is investigating the problem and will share an update as soon as they can. Popular services like ChatGPT, despite being backed by a very robust infrastructureare not exempt from presenting problems. Over the past few months, the chatbot has suffered some outages, although these have not lasted for long. We have to wait to find out how long it will take for the service to return to normal.
When we talk about ChatGPT we are referring to one of the most popular AI chatbots on the planet. According to official data published this month, this service is used by approximately 300 million users per week. The success of this product may be due to several factors, but we can mention two of the most notable: ChatGPT, launched in November 2022, marked a before and after in the chatbot concept. Furthermore, its rivals have been slow to offer equivalent or superior products.
The above does not mean that there are no interesting options. If you need to use a chatbot, you currently have many alternatives: Gemini from Google, Copilot from Microsoft and Claude from Anthropic. Since ChatGPT recently added search capabilities, if you need something similar you can turn to Perplexity. Even if you need a “reasoning” model like o1, Google offers in its Gemini chatbot the option of using its Gemini 1.5 Pro Deep Research model (available for paying users).
If you wish, you can also run your AI models locally. To do so you do not need to have a NASA computer, you just have to meet certain minimum requirements. You will undoubtedly need power and, above all, free space to download the model. One of the easiest ways for you to experience AI locally is LM Studio. Some editors have tested Llama 3 Instruct models on the latest MacBook Pros.
