OpenAI has introduced Study Mode in ChatGPT, a feature intended to guide users through problems in a step-by-step manner rather than supplying immediate answers. It uses interactive prompts, structured responses, and follow-up questions to encourage active engagement and support comprehension.

The company says the feature is aimed at a common issue in AI-assisted learning: while ChatGPT is often used for homework help, exam preparation, and exploring new topics, providing instant solutions can limit the learning process. Study Mode instead incorporates hints, Socratic-style questioning, and knowledge checks that adapt to a user’s skill level.

Developed with input from teachers, scientists, and pedagogy experts, Study Mode is based on principles from learning science, including managing cognitive load, encouraging participation, and promoting self-reflection. It is designed to adjust to individual goals and knowledge levels.

Key features include:

  • Interactive prompts using Socratic-style questioning and hints.
  • Scaffolded responses that break down topics into connected, digestible sections.
  • Personalized support based on prior interactions and assessed skill level.
  • Knowledge checks with quizzes or open-ended questions and tailored feedback.
  • Easy toggling between Study Mode and standard ChatGPT responses.

To activate Study Mode, users can choose “Study and learn” from the ChatGPT tools menu before asking a question.

Early feedback has been positive, though some Reddit users note potential challenges in encouraging widespread adoption:

Genuinely a good feature. The challenge, of course, will be getting people to use it. I suspect that the allure of a quick answer will still prove irresistible to many.

Some see broader implications for self-directed learning:

This is a good move by OpenAI because we don’t want to live in a world where everyone is getting dumber because AI is doing all the thinking. I guess ChatGPT could become like a huge Khan Academy AI tutor app. Long term, this might actually impact college admissions if more people are using this to self-learn.

OpenAI describes this as an early release, with the current implementation relying on system instructions rather than direct model training. Planned updates include richer visual explanations, progress tracking, and deeper personalization. The company is also collaborating with research groups, including Stanford’s SCALE Initiative, to investigate the impact of AI on learning outcomes.

Study Mode is currently available to logged-in users on the Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans, with access for ChatGPT Edu expected in the coming weeks.
