OpenAI reported that one of its accounts was hacked on Monday, when an unauthorized individual sent messages asking users to click through to a crypto token that it claimed was related to the artificial intelligence startup.
On Monday morning, prior to the incident hitting the press, a member of OpenAI’s security staff posted an internal memo to employees alerting them to a recent surge in account takeovers involving OpenAI employees and sharing guidance on how to secure their accounts, according to a source familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private information.
This isn’t the first instance of a fraudulent crypto-related post from an account linked to OpenAI. On Sunday, researcher Jason Wei’s account posted a similar message claiming to announce a token called $OPENAI. And in June, OpenAI Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki’s account was hijacked. Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati’s account was also briefly taken over in June 2023.OpenAI News Account on X Compromised, Sends Crypto Messages
