OpenAI is ramping up efforts in AI hardware through strategic partnerships with Luxshare Precision and Goertek. Luxshare will assemble at least one upcoming device, while Goertek will provide speaker modules and other components. The company’s first product is expected to be a screenless smart speaker branded as an AI companion, designed by former Apple design chief Jony Ive. Featuring a minimalist design and multimodal interaction, the device is planned for release by late 2026 with a shipment target of 100 million units. The initiative marks a pivotal step in OpenAI’s expansion from software to hardware, potentially creating new growth opportunities for China’s consumer electronics supply chain.
