Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Oracle have made Oracle Database@AWS generally available, enabling customers to run Oracle Exadata Database Service and Oracle Autonomous Database on dedicated infrastructure within Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) on AWS. This general availability expands the Oracle Database@AWS reach to customers in Northern Virginia and Oregon, with plans to expand to 20 more AWS regions worldwide.

“Enterprise customers can seamlessly migrate their Oracle database workloads to Oracle Database@AWS without re-architecting applications, all while benefiting from the security, resiliency, and scalability of AWS’s global infrastructure,” said G2 Krishnamoorthy, Vice President, Database Services, AWS.

A New Offering

Oracle and AWS indicated in a July 8 statement that the launch of Oracle Database@AWS represents a significant shift for any organization running critical Oracle workloads. The advancements under this partnership include:

  • Uncompromised Oracle Performance in AWS: Organizations don’t need to sacrifice signature Oracle features like Real Application Clusters (RAC) to run within their preferred cloud. This service brings Oracle’s hardware to AWS, allowing organizations to run the latest Database 23ai with its embedded AI Vector capabilities, ensuring peak performance and high availability right next to existing AWS resources.
  • A Unified, Pipeline-Free Data Ecosystem: The built-in zero-ETL integration dismantles the need for complex, costly data pipelines between Oracle database and AWS analytics. Data flows directly, enabling organizations to seamlessly integrate their transactional data with AWS’s suite of analytics, machine learning, and generative AI services for faster and more profound insights.
  • Strategic Flexibility and Modernization: Rather than forcing a choice between clouds, the partnership complements existing options, allowing for seamless integration. It provides a powerful pathway to modernize applications by connecting a robust, familiar database environment to the innovative services of AWS, unlocking new possibilities for application enhancement and data analysis.

“Customers have been putting their most valuable data in Oracle databases for decades,” said Karan Batta, Senior Vice President, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. “Oracle Database@AWS lets them run Oracle Database workloads on OCI in AWS. This enables customers to fully leverage Oracle Database 23ai, simplifying application development and running mission-critical workloads with AI and native vector embeddings. Combined with AWS’s advanced generative AI and analytics services, this gives customers a truly remarkable solution.”

Early Adopters

According to Oracle, early adopters of Oracle Database@AWS across the financial services, insurance, and technology sectors are reporting significant gains in operational efficiency and digital innovation.

The service, which runs Oracle’s database hardware directly within AWS data centers, is being positioned as a critical enabler for companies that require both the high-performance resilience of Oracle and the agile service ecosystem of AWS.

Enterprises, including Fidelity Investments and SAS, are leveraging the new integrated cloud service to tackle complex business challenges.

For Fidelity Investments, the move is about maintaining enterprise-grade stability while accelerating its digital evolution. “When you address the need for both cloud agility and performance, you can innovate faster, scale more efficiently, and deliver the secure, responsive experiences that strengthen the financial well-being of millions of customers,” said Joe Frazier, Head of Architecture and Engineering at Fidelity.

The partnership also addresses a key need for flexibility in the enterprise software space. Analytics leader SAS, which serves a broad customer base, emphasized the importance of customer choice. “At SAS, we make it a priority to empower our customers to operate in the cloud of their choice,” said Jay Upchurch, Chief Information Officer at SAS. “Oracle Database@AWS’s integrated capabilities give them high-performance access to their applications and data in AWS.”

What This Means for ERP Insiders

Cloud migration just got simpler and safer. The partnership between Oracle and AWS fundamentally reduces the risk of moving a complex, customized ERP application to the cloud. The compatibility with proven tools, such as Oracle Zero Downtime Migration, and the use of Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) across multiple AWS Availability Zones enable organizations to migrate their most critical systems with greater confidence and less disruption. This lift-and-shift strategy has a much stronger safety net, designed specifically for the enterprise applications that are already trusted.

Stop wasting existing Oracle investments. Organizations can now procure this service directly through the AWS Marketplace and use existing AWS spending commitments to pay for it. More importantly, it honors current Oracle licenses and enables businesses to leverage discount programs, such as Oracle Support Rewards. It essentially eliminates the financial penalty of moving to the cloud, allowing ERP users to consolidate spending and maximize the value of the significant investments they’ve already made in Oracle and AWS.

The Oracle-AWS partnership is a bridge to innovation. This offering positions organizations to position their existing ERP databases for the future. By placing core ERP data alongside AWS services, ERP users can begin building modern, scalable applications around trusted systems of record. For example, organizations can utilize the new AI Vector Search in Oracle Database 23ai to integrate their product data and seamlessly connect it to AWS AI services, thereby building a smarter recommendation engine or a generative AI-powered support tool. It allows ERP to become the stable core of a modern, intelligent application ecosystem, rather than an isolated data silo.
