Oracle recently launched their E6 compute shape for Oracle Cloud and powered by AMD EPYC 9005 “Turin” processors. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure also launched their Compute Cloud@Customer X11 and Private Cloud Appliance X11 platforms that are all powered by the E6 compute shape with 5th Gen AMD EPYC. For those curious about the performance and value of the Oracle Cloud E6 shape compared to prior-gen E5 as well as alternatives from Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, these benchmarks are geared for you.

This round of public cloud benchmarks is looking at the performance of the Oracle E6 shape compared to prior Oracle E5. Plus from Microsoft Azure looking at the performance of their similar D16ds_v6 instance powered by Intel Xeon Platinum 8573C (Emerald Rapids) and the Azure D16pds_v6 powered by the Azure Cobalt 100 ARM64 SoC. For comparison on the Google Cloud side was looking at the c4-standard-16 powered by the Intel Xeon Platinum 8581C (Emerald Rapids) and the c4a-standard-16 powered by the Google Axion ARM64 processor. For comparison over on the Amazon AWS side was the m8g.4xlarge powered by Graviton4 and then the m8i.4xlarge powered by the Intel Xeon 6975P-C (Granite Rapids) processor.

With these instances they were tested all at 16 vCPUs. With Oracle Cloud going off the “OCPU” unit, which includes both the physical core and sibling thread, the Oracle E5 and Oracle E6 shapes were tested both at 8 OCPU and 16 OCPU.

The Oracle E6 instances tested were all using AMD EPYC 9J45 processors, a custom SKU for the CSP with 128 cores and 4.1GHz clock speed. The AMD EPYC 9J45 has all the same ISA capabilities and other features inline with the AMD EPYC 9005 series.

All of these instances were tested on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with the default software components. The default storage was used for each of the instances under test as well as the default system memory capacity for each instance type/shape.

In addition to looking at the raw performance of each CSP instance, the value as in performance-per-dollar was also analyzed based on the on-demand hourly pricing for each of the instances tested. Thanks to AMD for covering the costs of these different cloud provider/instance benchmarks for making this testing and article possible.
