Since June 19, 2024, motorists circulating on the A14 have been able to experiment with a new driving experience: the Free flow toll. At the end of December, it was even the entire A13 motorway, between Paris and Normandy, which has put itself on this new billing system.
The idea is simple, and it promises to save time for travelers during their journeys. Concretely, there will be no more barrier, nor a counter to which it will be necessary to show white paw by paying. You will be able to pass without stopping, and adjust your due later. Unless you have a TV badge.
What’s a toll, what is it?
To operate, this new toll system uses two separate technologies: Automatic recognition of license plates and electronic transponders. If you have a subscriber to telepaling, nothing changes: the gantry equipped with an RFID player will read your badge and ensure automatic billing. The novelty concerns the ANPR cameras system which is installed at the level of the traffic lanes: by passing through the portico, a motorist will trigger a reading of his plate, which will then be processed by optical character recognition software, and identified.

Once the license plate has been identified, the Price will then be automatically calculated Depending on the vehicle class, the distance traveled, and its passage time. The driver or the driver will then be sent an invoice, electronically or by mail, that he or she will have a few days to pay.
What motorways are concerned?
Since June 19, 2024, theA14which links the defense to Orgeval (Yvelines) saw the device appear. It was followed on June 24 of the tolls of theA79which links the departments of Allier and Saône-et-Loire, and since the end of December 2024, of theA13 which connects Paris to Caen. This highway is the first fully equipped with free flow tolls.
What are the advantages?
On paper, free flow toll has only advantages: reduction in traffic jams, fluidification of traffic, automated payment, reduction of the margin of error on applied prices, limitation of greenhouse gas emissions in the Zone… The arrival of free flow toll will also reduce operating costs related to barriers’ management and workforce on site.
Rest that The system is also very expensivebecause of its much more complex implementation than on a traditional toll. ANPR systems must also be extremely precise to avoid billing errors, and the abusive collection of personal data.
In reality, there are also new constraints that appear: obligation to have a telepaling badge or obligation to pay for its online costs (or in the network of tobacconists NIRIO), savory fines in the event of forgetting, or questions on privacy. Of course, the French and foreigners passing through who do not master this new technology could be surprised in the event of a fine sent to the home.
How to pay for free flow toll?
To fulfill your due, several solutions are available to you. If you have subscribed to telepaling, you will have nothing to do. The badge embedded in your vehicle will be responsible for adding your passage to the list of your journeys, and you will receive a monthly invoice automatically removed from your bank account. Note that it is possible to have a free telepected badge at least for very long months thanks to the offers offered by the three market players (Vinci, Sanef and APRR).
For the others, it will be possible to create an online account on the Sanef platform. In a few clicks, you can Activate the automatic payment option After saving the registration number of your vehicle and that of your bank card. With each passage on the axes concerned, you will then be taken automatically.

If you don’t want to create an account, it is possible too. After each of your journeysit will be possible to go to the SANEF website, and to enter your license plate number within 72 hours after your visit to the gantry. It will then be possible to set the note online. Beware of delays: after the initial time, an increase of € 90 will be applied automatically. What convince the most heads in the air of opting for the direct debit.
What if we don’t have the internet?
A withdrawal solution is provided for travelers who do not have access to the Internet, or not wishing to adjust their online toll. It will thus be possible to surrender directly with a tobacconist of the Nirio approved network, and to enter the license plate of the vehicle. For the moment 4,000 partner businesses are affected.
