MORE than a dozen major games are closing down servers this year meaning players will lose access to key features.

Favourites including Resident Evil, WWE and Madden NFL are on the hit list over the coming months.

Game studios routinely shut down servers for online play when user numbers have fallen.

And some will be affected within days.

The soonest to face the chop is action role-player Dauntless, which was initially released in 2019.

From May 29, the servers will be shut down for good on all platforms including Windows, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.

The team said the decision was made “due to the negative public reception of TK and subsequent decline of active players”.

It also means the previously announced season 2 will no longer go ahead.

Another title going offline this month is MultiVersus, which featured various Warner Bros characters from DC, Looney Tunes and more.

The servers to play online will close on May 30.

But developers say there will be an option to play MultiVersus offline via the local gameplay mode “either solo against AI opponents or with up to three friends”.

To do this, you’ll need to install the latest version of the game and log in during Season 5 before the deadline.

WHY DO GAMES CLOSE?

By Jamie Harris, Assistant Technology and Science Editor at The Sun

With most games online these days, tech companies need to maintain quite hefty servers to manage everything.

It’s no cheap business to operate with millions of gamers across the world.

Naturally, people move on, leaving older games behind in the process.

There comes a point where it’s no longer viable to continue offering server access so studios shut them down.

For some games that are entirely online this can render it completely useless.

But others may have a way for you to continue playing solo still.

You should usually see a prominent notification in the game warning you with instructions on what to do – provided you’re still playing the game of course.
