Red Hat Inc. is adding features aimed at improving security, simplifying operations and enhancing virtualization management in the latest release of OpenShift 4.18, its Kubernetes-powered hybrid cloud application platform, which is available today.

Citing recent Gartner Inc. research that found that many operations teams are reevaluating their virtualization choices because of licensing changes, Red Hat said OpenShift 4.18 includes several updates designed to streamline the management of virtual machines and software containers. Those are lightweight, portable units that package applications and dependencies together to ensure consistency across different computing environments.

The new version adds user-defined networking to enable better VM connectivity, whether OpenShift within a data center or using Amazon Web Services Inc.’s OpenShift service. The feature allows for more hybrid cloud flexibility, Red Hat said.

VM storage migration, currently in technology preview, enables nondisruptive data movement between storage devices while a VM is running. Additionally, a tree-view navigation feature, also in preview, provides an organized way to group VMs for easier management.

The update also adds support for Border Gateway Protocol to user-defined networks. BGP is an internet routing protocol that directs data between autonomous systems, enabling more efficient and scalable network traffic exchange. The addition of BGP support improves segmentation and supports advanced networking needs such as static IP assignment and live migration.

New security-focused features include a Secret Store Container Storage Interface driver, which allows Kubernetes workloads to securely access external secret management systems without storing sensitive data on the cluster itself. This is said to enhance security by minimizing exposure to sensitive data while improving integration with OpenShift GitOps and OpenShift Pipelines.

With this release, OpenShift also now runs on more public cloud platforms. These include bare-metal deployments on Google LLC’s Cloud and Oracle Corp.’s Cloud Infrastructure. Additionally, Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization is now available on OCI as a technology preview.
