Opinion. Shuchi Sharma, Vice President and responsible for the Open Source and AI Program Office In Red Hat, he explains the reasons that have led the company to support the UN open source principles in a global corporate bet of an open world.
In Red Hat, we have always believed that the best technology arises from open collaboration. It is no secret that the components of the Red Hat products, from the Linux Business Linux Platform worldwide until the last innovations in the Red Hat AI Inference Server, are created in the original development environment, openly, with the communities and projects that make them possible. For three decades, the open source has been a fundamental principle for Red Hat. Although the technological sector in general took longer to adopt it, every year there are more organizations that opt for approaches that prioritize open source.
For this reason, Red Hat, as a defender of open source technologies and practiceshas decided to formally support the principles of the United Nations Open Source (UN). These principles reflect how we have always worked: building in open, contributing to projects and promoting communities that prosper thanks to inclusion and collaboration.
These guidelines seek to promote the collaboration and adoption of open source within the UN already global level. They were elaborated by Open Source United Community as part of the UN Digital Technology Network of the UN CHIEF Executive Board. The principles cover:
- Open by default: Make open source the standard approach to projects.
- Contribute to the project: Promote active participation in the open source ecosystem.
- Design insurance: Prioritize safety in all software projects
- Promote inclusive participation and community creation: Facilitate diverse and inclusive contributions.
- Design for reuse: Guarantee the interoperability of projects on different platforms and ecosystems.
- Provide documentation: Offer detailed documentation for end users, integrators and developers.
- Recognize, encourage, support and empower: Empower individuals and communities to actively participate.
- Keep and climb: Support the development of solutions that meet the changing needs of the UN system and beyond.
- Hold and climb: Support the development of solutions that meet the changing needs of the UN system and other areas.
These principles are incredibly similar, if not identical, to the way in which Red Hat already addresses development, promotion, adoption and innovation with open source technologies. The UN global nature and the wide range of its influence can only be positive when promoting the expansion of open -source participation and innovation worldwide. They recognize that open source is more than code. It is about developing systems in which people can trust and provide ways for governments and global institutions to demonstrate transparency, sustainability and accountability. That is why we are excited to join the UN in initiatives like these, and support annual events such as an Open Source Week.
Red Hat is proud to support and support this effort, joining other industry leaders, including Open Source Initiative, to promote a world that drives collaboration, inclusion and innovation by truly adopting the open source by default.
