Reddit went down for the second time in less than 24 hours.
Reports of issues with the community-focused message board site started from 2.50pm (GMT) before soaring to 12,000 just before 3.10pm, according to Downdetector.
People loading up the website were greeted with an HTTP ERROR 500, which signals an issue with the site server. Some users also reported difficulties opening the mobile app and on mobile internet browsers.
Reddit said in an incident report at 4.19pm: ‘We have fixed the problem and have returned to normal operation.’
On Downdetector around this time, disruption reports made in the UK plummeted to 283.
It was not immediately clear which countries were affected but tens of thousands of issues were flagged internationally, including in the US, Canada, Australia and Saudi Arabia.
This is the second time Reddit has faced mass disruption. Yesterday evening, Reddit wrote on X (formerly Twitter) in response to a question on it being down: ‘Yes. We’re working on it.’
Millions across the UK, US and Australia had trouble accessing the site yesterday in what Reddit described as ‘degraded performance’.
The cause was a ‘bug’ in its most recent update, a spokesperson said.
The San Francisco-based company has consistently ranked in the top 10 for most used websites in the world. Earlier this year, Reddit reported having 73million daily users and more than 100,000 active communities.
It is not the only recent outage the site has suffered.
On the US Election Day this year, Reddit was looking into ‘degraded performance’ and resolved the issues after hours.
Reddit went public in March, and in October reported it was profitable for the first time since becoming a publicly traded company.
