Mathieu officially retired from the NFL on Tuesday in a statement on social media.
“As I hang up my cleats, I’m filled with gratitude as I close this chapter of my life and officially retire from the game that’s shaped me in every way,” he wrote.
“From my first snap in college to my final play in the NFL, this journey has been nothing short of a blessing.
“Football gave me purpose, discipline, and memories that will stay with me forever. But more than anything, it gave me a community.
“To every coach who believed in me, every teammate who battled beside me, and every fan who showed up, cheered, and rode with me through the highs and lows, thank you.
“You gave me strength when I needed it most, and your love carried me farther than I ever imagined.
“I hope I made you proud out there. This isn’t goodbye — it’s just the next chapter.
“Much love, always. Tyrann.”
Despite that statement, Mathieu made it known to Kay Adams that he can’t rule anything out.
“I mean, I’m retired,” he said.
“And obviously I had that conversation with somebody close to me. I don’t think they really believed me, right?
“Because a couple days ago we were talking about how [Michael] Jordan took a couple years off and Deion [Sanders] did it.
“So, I think that’s always like a possibility. I don’t ever want to kind of rule anything out, but I think as of right now, where my spirit is, mentally, where I’m at, yeah, I think I’m for sure retired.”
Mathieu’s retirement came as a shock to many, but the Saints were prepared.
