According to leaker Majin Bu, Apple is experimenting with two new colors for this year’s iPhone 17 base models, but only one might make it to launch. And if the current internal scuttlebutt is anything to go by, there seems to be a frontrunner.

Purple vs. Green

Bu’s sources say that Purple and Green are currently in development for the aluminum-framed iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus, but Apple will likely pick just one of them for the final lineup this fall. And Purple is in the lead.

As the leaker previously reported, the new Purple shade has generated strong interest within Apple, with internal descriptions calling it a “vibrant hue” that plays well with the aluminum frame.

Bu describes the Purple as “a vibrant and modern hue crafted for those seeking a device with bold personality,” while the Green is said to offer a “fresh and natural tone, ideal for a minimalist yet striking aesthetic.”

Still, he says, “only one color might make the final cut, with expectations leaning toward Purple being the likely choice for release.”

Purple, of course, would be a returning champion, as it has previously done quite well when released either mid-cycle, or as one of the official initial colors of iPhones 12, 13, and 15. Green iPhones, meanwhile, have been less frequent.

What else to expect

Color aside, the iPhone 17 base models are shaping up to be a bigger upgrade than usual. Alongside a larger display, Apple is expected to bring 120Hz refresh rates to its base device for the first time. That means smoother scrolling, better animations, and improved battery management.

The iPhone 17 is also expected to get an A18 chip and a single back camera supported by a pill-shaped horizontal bump that will run across the entire width of the device. However, whether one of the options will be in Green or Purple, we’ll have to wait until September to officially find out.

Which option would you prefer? Have you ever had either a Green or a Purple iPhone? Let us know in the comments.
