We already know a great deal about Samsung’s upcoming XR headset, which is set to rival the Apple Vision Pro. We even tried the Samsung Project Moohan headset ourselves a few months ago.

When the Project Moohan specs leaked, we had hoped that a release date would follow, but none was announced. Today, ET News reports that Samsung is planning to announce the headset on October 21 (which will actually be October 22 in Korea). The report didn’t reveal how long it would take for Samsung to start selling the headset after the reveal, but we imagine the gap won’t be too big.

We’d previously heard rumors of a September 29 launch for Project Moohan, but the latest report states that the company pushed it back due to “internal marketing strategy coordination and quality assurance.” ET News also reported that Samsung plans to ship 100,000 units in its initial run, and it will adjust the quantity based on demand thereafter.

The Project Moohan XR headset, which is the result of a partnership with Google, is powered by the Snapdragon XR Plus Gen 2 chipset, and the dual micro-OLED displays have a reported high resolution of 3552 x 3840 with support for advanced eye- and hand-tracking.

The device runs the Android XR platform, which includes tight integration with Google Gemini. You control Moohan with hand gestures. and our own Philip Michaels had a chance to try out various apps, including YouTube in 3D. You can also view spatial photos through the headset and check out immersive fly-overs of locations in Google Maps.

Plus, with Gemini on board, you can ask questions about various locations or anything you see on the screen, a big advantage over the Vision Pro.

Leaks and rumors about Project Moohan’s price have been circulating widely. One rumor that’s a little surprising is the potential price. Reports suggest that the price will be around $2,000, although there’s also speculation that it could range from as low as $1,800 to as high as $2,900.

If the $2,000 price ends up being accurate, that would put the Android-based headset $1,500 less than Apple’s offering. It’s still a high barrier to entry, but a difference of that magnitude could be a significant factor in getting new people to try an XR headset for themselves.

We’ll have to wait until October to hear all of the details, but if you’re an XR fan (or even somewhat curious about XR), this is a product to keep an eye on.
