This is a first for Samsung Display, who decided to make an impression (and the eyes) during his first participation in the Augmented World Exo (AWE) in Long Beach, California. The company presented an impressive series of screens dedicated to mixed reality headsets (XR), including oledos slabs reaching up to 20,000 brightness and a record density of 5,000 pixels per inch (PPI).

The big game for Samsung

The OLEDOS panels, which are based on a silicon substrate instead of the usual glass, make it possible to obtain increased performance on small areas, ideal for augmented or virtual reality headsets. Samsung combines this technology with a micro-lentil matrix (Micro Lens Array) in order to improve vision angles and brightness. Result: miniature screens as clear, or even more, than a 4K TV.

The flagship model, a 1.4 -inch RGB OLEDOS panel with its 5,000 ppi and 15,000 Nits, had already been noticed at the Display Week show in May, where he won a “people’s Choice Award” in the AR/VR/MR category. For AWE, Samsung went even further, revealing a 1.3 inch prototype to 4,200 ppi and 20,000 Nits, a first in the sector.

The living room was also an opportunity for Samsung to highlight a range of OLED products, from the foldable screen to the extendable screen. Among them, a concept of “Flex Gaming” slab for portable devices, a foldable and wrapable version of 12.4 inch, and an amazing stretch micro-LED screen.

On the gaming side, Samsung presented its 49 and 27-inch QD-Oled monitors, but also a customized version of the Steam Deck console, with a homemade OLED screen. The objective is to demonstrate that the technologies developed for video games are perfectly transposable to XR helmets, where the responsiveness and fidelity of colors are essential for immersion.

Samsung is counting on this convergence to consolidate its advance in the sector. According to its estimates, the XR screens market should go from $ 600 million in 2025 to more than 4 billion in 2030, with an annual growth of 47 %. Oledos panels alone would represent up to 80 % of this market.

Samsung has been preparing for several months a mixed reality headset under Android XR, code name “Project Moohan”. Even if the group has not confirmed which slab will be integrated into the final device, it is likely that the Oledos panels exposed this week constitute the technological heart (and eyes).
