Samsung has unveiled a new kind of e-paper display that promises to usher in a new era of sustainable displays. The 13-inch Samsung Color E-Paper is the world’s first to be designed with a bio-resin derived from, of all things, phytoplankton.
That accounts for 10% of the housing, while 45% comes from recycled plastic. That results in a big reduction in the regular plastics used in the construction. Samsung says this brings down the carbon emissions used in manufacturing by over 40%.
You won’t be buying it to replace your Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra as the display is designed for shelves, counter tops and tables. Anywhere where traditional signage is used, Samsung says. The A4-like display has a 4:3 aspect ratio and a 1600 x 1200.
Samsung says: “Samsung’s advanced colour imaging algorithm enhances color accuracy and readability to deliver a paper-like look and feel. By smoothing gradations and refining contours, it produces vivid visuals that resemble traditional posters and point-of-purchase displays, helping businesses transition naturally from printed materials to digital signage.”
It’s described as ultra-slim, but it’s 17.9mm. That’s one seventh of an inch. And with the battery it weighs 0.9km.
Samsung says the efficiency extends to the operation itself. It maintains static images at zero watts power overall. “When content is updated, overall energy4 use remains far lower than that of conventional digital signage, which helps lower operating costs over time,” Samsung writes.
Operation is managed by the Samsung E-Paper App on Android and iOS, where users can update and upload content. It’ll be displayed at the ISE 2026 show in Barcelona next week.
