New versions of SanDisk portable SSDs
The external design of the units has changed little since we had the opportunity to analyze the first generation of this series. Back in 2018, we highlighted its portability, resistance and performanceand those continue to be its main characteristics, in addition to increasing the purchase options, depending on the use case and storage capacity needs.
- The SanDisk Extreme Portable Pro It is the top of the range version. Designed for professional photographers, filmmakers and designers, it is designed to support demanding creative and multi-streaming workflows, including real-time editing and working with high-resolution media. The drive offers transfer speeds of up to 4,000 MB/s, enabling tasks such as moving up to 10 minutes of 12K video in just under a minute. It will be marketed in capacities of 2, 4 and 8 Tbytes.
- The SanDisk Extreme Portable It is the intermediate version. It is aimed at creative photography and video enthusiasts, and professionals working with large file sizes. The drive offers sequential read speeds of up to 2000 MB/s and enables tasks such as transferring up to 1000 high-resolution photos in less than 60 seconds. It will be distributed in capacities of 500 GB, 1, 2 and 4 Tbytes.
- Sandisk Portable SSD. The third version of SanDisk’s portable SSDs is aimed at mass consumers, students or workers who need portable and reliable storage for everyday digital content, backing up files, storing photos and videos, and managing personal data. It offers read speeds of up to 1000 MB/s and capacities of 500 GB, and 1 and 2 Tbytes.

All units have compact dimensions in weight and thickness, to be carried in a pocket or backpack. The Extreme series resists drops of up to three meters and protects against spills thanks to its IP65 rating. They also include password protection with 256-bit AES hardware encryption and a warranty of up to five years.

The SanDisk Extreme Portable is now available in some regions with a suggested introductory Price of $259 for the 1 Tbyte version. It is clear that the memory crisis directly affects external SSDs, because their price is significantly higher than that of previous generations. The ‘Pro’ variants and the base version will be available in the second half of the year.
