UK Science Minister Lord Patrick Vallace has called for a deeper partnership with the US health tech and life science sector, describing the move as critical to both nations’ economic growth.
Speaking to business, investment and academic leaders from the sector at the BIO 2025 conference in Boston, Massachusetts, Vallance said combining the UK’s strengths in its wealth of health data and top universities with the US’ culture of technological innovation, new cures for diseases can be found, health tech businesses on both sides of the Atlantic can grow and thousands of high-skilled jobs can be created.
Vallance described life sciences as a priority for the UK as a driver of economic growth as well as an essential field for improving public health.
“Science is always stronger when we work with others. Working together with the UK’s greatest ally, the United States, is one of the prime examples of this. From space exploration to defence, our special relationship has always pushed the dial of progress forwards,” said Vallance.
“Today we have a unique opportunity to bring our skills and resources together to tackle one of the great challenges of our era: our health.
“New technologies are offering the hope of treatments and cures for diseases long thought incurable, and are the foundations upon which new businesses, jobs and even entire industries are built.
“Let’s seize this moment together, so both our countries can be healthier, and more prosperous.”
The Treasury recently dedicated £520m of funding for supporting life science manufacturing, as well as committing a record level of funding for research and development in last week’s Spending Review.
